The following is a statement from the Eureka Police Department:

The Eureka Police Department is still actively investigating the fatal pedestrian collision that occurred on May 22, 2024 in the 900 block of I Street in Eureka. However, at this point in the investigation and based on the evidence gathered during the investigation, a Ramey warrant has been issued for Maria Cuevas, 30, of Eureka, for the offenses of grossly negligent manslaughter and hit and run causing death or injury. Additional charges of driving under the influence causing bodily harm have been filed against her.
submitted to the district attorney’s office for review, with Cuevas admitting to using nitric oxide just before the collision.

Cuevas is currently in custody at the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on the aforementioned charges and is being held on $65,000 bail and probation.
