Missouri records eight fatal traffic crashes during July 4 holiday

Jefferson City, MO – Eight people died in traffic accidents and one person drowned during the July 4 holiday season, according to preliminary reports from the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The counting period ran from 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, to 11:59 p.m. Sunday, July 7.

According to Capt. Scott B. White, officers responded to 382 motor vehicle accidents, resulting in 159 injuries and eight deaths. Of the fatalities, three occurred in the area of ​​Troop B, Macon, two in the area of ​​Troop C, Weldon Spring and Troop D, Springfield, and one in the area of ​​Troop I, Rolla.

On the water, police investigated 10 boating accidents, with seven injuries but no fatalities. However, one person drowned in Stockton Lake on Saturday. Craig H. Olson, 60, of Shawnee, KS, went under and did not resurface while swimming near the vessel. Cedar County Deputy Coroner Joe Trussel pronounced Olson dead at the scene.
