The video that went viral is from 2021 and shows an attack on Ashdod in southern Israel, likely carried out by Hamas, not Hezbollah.

Claim ID e9a52646

What is the claim?

A video circulating on social media purports to show a massive fire engulfing the Meron military base in Israel. The footage comes after the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah allegedly attacked the Mount Meron area in northern Israel on July 7. Several users shared the footage as footage of the recent attack.

One user shared the video, writing: “ URGENT Explosions and massive fire engulfing #Meron military base .” You can access archived versions of such posts Here AND Here.

The Times of Israel reported that in the recent escalation of tensions, Hezbollah has repeatedly attacked Mount Meron, near the border with Lebanon, firing rockets at the mountain and missiles at a nearby air traffic control base.

But that claim is misleading. The video that went viral is not from the recent escalation of tensions and was recorded after Hamas allegedly attacked the southern Israeli city of Ashdod on May 15, 2021.

How did we discover the truth?

Reverse image search on keyframes from a popular video showed that Israel Defense Forces (IDF) (archives Here) posted a video on May 15, 2021, stating that it was a Gaza attack on the city of Ashdod. According to the IDF, the video shows damage caused by one of the rockets fired at Ashdod.

The viral video is two seconds long and consists of two clips combined. The first clip is from around 0:06 of the original video. The second clip is from between 0:01 and 0:02 of the video released by the IDF.

The comparison below shows that the same person can be seen moving in a single frame of both the original and the popular video.

Furthermore, the same structures can be seen in both films, as indicated below.

Saudi news agency Al Arabiya also published clip in a longer film (archive) Here) on YouTube on May 15, 2021. The title of the video, written in Arabic, was: “Massive destruction as a result of rockets fired from Gaza at the city of Ashdod.”

According to the report Sky News On May 15, 2021, both Israel and Palestine launched attacks on each other, causing damage in both countries. In Gaza City, 10 Palestinians, including eight children, were killed in an Israeli attack, while one Israeli was killed in a rocket attack near Tel Aviv. The report also included a version of the video released by the IDF with the caption, “Hamas rocket hits Israeli city.”

Verdict

An old video from 2021 is being shared as an incident from a recent Hezbollah attack on Israel. The viral video reportedly shows damage from an airstrike from Gaza on Ashdod in 2021. That’s why we’ve flagged the claim as misleading.
