Migori: 12 Buried Alive, 6 Rescued After Kanga Mine Collapse

Migori: Rongo residents were gripped by fear as the mine buried 12 miners alive.

Six of them were rescued during the mission and were taken to various hospitals in the county.

The incident occurred at dawn on Tuesday, July 9, in Kanga, Rongo County.

Rongo District Deputy Commissioner George Matundura confirmed the incident, saying the mine collapsed from the entrance side.

“Today we received a report of an accident in this mine in which 18 people were buried alive. We managed to rescue six people in critical condition, while 12 are still trapped,” the officer said.

He added that the rescue operation had to be suspended while waiting for experts from the district authorities to arrive because the mine was very deep.

“There are no fatalities so far, but we need to speed up the rescue operation because the mine is deep and those trapped may lack oxygen,” he added.

Residents appealed to the district authorities for quick intervention and help in rescuing the trapped people in order to avoid fatalities.

“The rescue operation is taking longer than expected because the mine is 750 feet deep and we still do not have experts who can help,” said Caleb Onyango, a local rescuer.

The mine is estimated to be about 750 feet deep and four hours later, 12 miners are still trapped beneath it while experts from the county government are being sought to help free them.
