Winter Haven 17-year-old dies, 15-year-old seriously injured after truck crashes into oak tree

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (WFLA) — A 17-year-old from Winter Haven was killed Monday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash, according to officials.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened around 3:06 p.m. on Spirit Lake Road, south of Oakwood Estates.

Investigators said it appears the 17-year-old driver and 15-year-old passenger from Deltona were traveling south when the driver lost control of the vehicle on a curve.

The truck then hit an oak tree, trapping the two teenagers inside.

The 17-year-old died at the scene, the sheriff said. The 15-year-old was taken to a Tampa hospital with “a brain hemorrhage, facial fractures, lung damage and various broken bones.”

Police are investigating whether seat belts were worn in the crash, but it appears wet road conditions may have been a factor in the crash.
