Video shows tanker explosion in Brazil, not South Africa

A South African user shared a 12-second video showing flames shooting out of a truck on the side of a highway, just before it exploded.

Social media users also posted the same clip on TikTok and Facebook, where it was viewed 84,000 times.

South Africa’s northern Limpopo region has seen several fatal road accidents, including a serious collision in September 2023 that claimed the lives of 20 people (archived here and here ).

However, the footage shows the explosion in northern Brazil, not South Africa.

Explosion in Brazil

Using reverse image search, AFP Fact Check found several news reports about a truck explosion in Brazil on July 4, 2024, that used the same video used in the fake post (archived here and here ).

“Tank explosion injures six in Para; watch the exact moment,” reads the headline of a CNN Brazil article featuring the footage.

Para is a state in northern Brazil (archive here).

The CNN Brazil footage shows the same traffic cone, highway markings and truck.

According to the article, people injured in the explosion were taken to hospital.

SBT Brazil, a local news program, reported that several of its journalists were injured in the explosion (archive here).

“Para tanker explosion injures SBT team,” reads the headline in Portuguese.

SBT Brazil also shared a similar video of the explosion recorded from a different perspective (archived here).

SBT Brazil television reported that the explosion occurred on a highway between Paragominas and Ulianópolis, two cities in the state of Para.

AFP correspondents in Brazil confirmed the incident, saying the explosion occurred on the BR-010 highway connecting the two cities.

Moreover, there have been no reports in the South African media in recent days of a roadside explosion in Limpopo in July 2024.

AFP Fact Check has contacted South African authorities for comment.
