Rescue teams rescue suicidal man from Ithaca bridge

On Tuesday at approximately 8:45 a.m., Ithaca Police, Fire Department and Bangs Ambulance responded to the scene of a suicidal man holding on to a suspension bridge near Giles Street.

Officers quickly made contact with the person hanging on the other side of the security fence. As the person moved to jump, officers and firefighters caught them through the fence. Firefighters cut the mesh and attached a harness to safely pull the person to safety.

The person was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. The cooperation of emergency medical services and a compassionate 911 caller saved his life. If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text the suicide hotline at 988.
