Two dead, 12 trapped after gold mine collapses in Migori

Two people have been confirmed dead following the collapse of a 750-metre gold mine wall in Kanga, Rongo, Migori County.

There were 18 miners working at the Choppa gold mine when the walls collapsed.

More than 10 people are still trapped in the mine as rescue operations are underway. Four others are being treated at Rongo Sub-District Hospital.

The Rongo District Deputy Commissioner confirmed the tragic incident and appealed for help in carrying out a rescue mission.

Tuesday’s incident comes just a week after seven miners lost their lives at the Kasweto gold mine in Lumba village in Rarieda County.
