NEW DELHI: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has constituted a team of design experts that will review all planning decisions.

The possibility of creating a “design department” was discussed at an executive committee meeting last month, after which the agency began the recruitment process. The team of nine experts will include a bridge or structural engineer, hydrology experts, a geologist and an estimator.

The team will assist and advise the NHAI on design or layout plan activities and verify the comprehensive layout prepared by the consultant. It will also analyze the soil investigation report and confirm the adequacy of geotechnical details and recommendations.

A recent circular regarding the employment of design experts stated that the department will check and analyze the adequacy of the design of various elements of the bridge: foundation, substructure and superstructure, taking into account durability and long-term serviceability.

The team will also evaluate and verify the construction sequence and methodology. Any revisions to the design and supporting drawings due to changes in site conditions or any other important reason will also be reviewed by the newly formed expert teams.

“To assist NHAI in technical matters…To review geotechnical data…To prepare standard drawings and designs of structures like VUPs (vehicle underpasses), LVUPs (light vehicle underpasses), culverts and other works,” the circular reads.

Barrage on Nepal border to stop floods in Bihar

Minister of State for Jal Shakti Raj Bhsuhan Choudhary said a high dam will be constructed on the India-Nepal border to check the flood situation in Bihar. “The northern region of Bihar is experiencing floods due to heavy water discharge from Nepal,” he said.
