Residents in Melbourne’s west have been warned to look out for smoke following an explosion involving a large chemical at a factory.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at an address on Swann Drive in Derrimut, about 30km from Melbourne’s central business district, at about 11.20am on Wednesday.

A serious chemical explosion at a factory has led to a large fire that is being tackled by several specialist firefighting teams, including aerial firefighting equipment.

A community hazard warning has been issued for Albion, Braybrook, Brooklyn, Derrimut, Laverton North, Sunshine, Sunshine West, Tottenham and Truganina.

The community is not under threat, but people have been urged to monitor the situation.

Drivers in the area were advised to keep windows open and turn on supply ventilation.

Paramedics are also present at the scene.
