State police report 774 crashes, 556 drunk driving arrests over Independence Day weekend

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania. — The Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) on Tuesday released the results of its annual Independence Day weekend safety sweep aimed at improving road safety across the state.

The State Fire Service investigated 774 car accidents, which resulted in 11 deaths and 244 injuries between July 3 and 7. Driving under the influence of alcohol was the cause of 64 accidents, including four fatalities.

Over the course of five days, officers arrested 556 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and issued 28,429 tickets, including:

  • 7975 for speeding;
  • 876 for not wearing a seat belt;
  • 225 for not securing children in safety seats.
