MARGAO: The grim reality of road accidents in Goa shows no signs of abating. In the first five months of this year, the state recorded 1,197 accidents, of which 148 were fatal. While the number of accidents has come down slightly compared to the same period last year, the number of fatalities has gone up slightly. During the same period last year, 1,243 accidents were reported, of which 146 were fatal.

In May 2024 alone, in both counties there were 216 accidents, resulting in 35 deaths.

Despite efforts by the Margao and Colva traffic cells to reduce the number of fatal accidents in Salcete, where there are five police stations, the statistics remain alarming. In the first five months of 2024, there were 271 accidents in which 33 people died. The most fatal accidents, eight each, occurred in the Maina-Curtorim and Cuncolim police station areas, followed by seven in Fatorda, six in Colva and four in Margao town.

A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, mentioned that steps are being taken to reduce road accidents, including campaigns against drunk driving and implementation of preventive safety systems such as drowsy driver detection and alcohol sensors. The officer emphasised the role of traffic police in educating drivers and the public about safe driving practices, traffic violations and their consequences through awareness campaigns, awareness programmes and workshops.

In addition, the traffic police cooperate with local authorities to identify and reduce the risk of accidents, dangerous intersections and other hazards.
