The southbound lanes of I-85 have been shut down due to a suicide, according to the Gastonia Police Department.

Traffic going south on the interstate through Gastonia is being rerouted near exit 21.

The Department of Transportation recommends this detour: Motorists use Exit 21 (Cox Road), left on Cox Road, right to US 29/US 74 West Franklin Boulevard to I-85 South. Alternate route: Exit 27 (NC 273 South), right to US 29/US 74 West to I-85 South.

According to the DOT, the interstate is expected to be shut down until about 3 pm

No further information was released as of noon Monday.
