Suspect charged with murder in University City homicide

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Police have charged a 22-year-old man with murder in connection with a homicide that happened near the University City neighborhood Tuesday.

Following a homicide investigation, the Concord Police Department obtained arrest warrants for Demarius Jeprese Poole.

Poole was already in custody at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office on unrelated charges. He was charged with murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle in connection with the homicide.

The shooting happened on Carver Boulevard near West Sugar Creek Road. Around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to Atrium Health University for a report of a victim with a gunshot wound.

The victim, later identified as Marquez Alexander Summers, 19, died at the hospital.
