What to do after a car accident in Los Angeles

No one can predict a car accident or collision, but you can prepare for one. A car accident checklist in your glove box can help you stay calm and organized after a car accident. It can tell you what to do, what not to do, and how to best protect your rights. You are not alone after a collision, no matter how big or small it may be.

Whether you are the victim of a car accident or a family member of a deceased loved one, here is what to do after a car accident:

  1. Keep Calm – Stay at the scene and make sure everyone is OK. First check yourself for injuries, then check others. Stay calm and try to regain your composure.
  2. Go to a safe place – Move your vehicle or pull over to the side of the road if you can. Turn on your hazard lights to warn other drivers of the accident. This will let them know to slow down as they approach. Get to a safe place to wait for the police.
  3. Call 911 – Call the authorities to report the accident as soon as possible. Police can document the incident, gather information, and make it part of the official record.
  4. Exchange information – Exchange names, phone numbers and insurance information with other drivers involved in the accident. If possible, take photos of the vehicles, license plates and other important details.
  5. Don’t plead guilty – This is a common mistake people make after any car accident. When talking to a police officer, stick to the facts of what happened, but never admit fault or say “sorry.” However, be as specific as possible in your description of the collision.
  6. Seek medical attention – Go to a hospital or your GP immediately. Immediate medical attention can help reduce the damage you have suffered from your injuries. Tests and scans can detect internal injuries that may not yet show symptoms.
  7. Report to your insurance company – Most insurance carriers have time limits on how quickly you must report an accident in California. Call quickly and follow the agent’s directions to report the accident.
  8. Talk to insurance adjusters – You may get a call from the other side’s insurance company the day of your accident. You can talk to a claims adjuster, but don’t give out more information than is necessary. Don’t write a statement or accept an insurance settlement offer until you’ve spoken to a lawyer.
  9. Create file – Keep your accident-related documents in one place and organized. Your file should include a copy of the police report, medical bills, information about the other driver, injury treatment plans, and any other documents you have collected about the incident.
  10. Call Our Car Accident Lawyers – If you have any concerns, call us at (888) 488-1391. We offer a free consultation so you can discuss your car accident without risk or obligation.
