Washington: One of Hollywood’s top fundraisers for U.S. President Joe Biden called on Wednesday for a new Democratic presidential candidate, arguing that the party cannot win the White House election in November with him as its candidate.

“We will not win in November with this president. We will not win the House and we will lose the Senate. That is not just my opinion, it is the opinion of every senator, member of Congress and governor that I have spoken to privately. Every single one, regardless of what they say publicly,” said George Clooney, actor, director and film producer, in an editorial in New York Times.

Clooney, who hosted a highly successful fundraiser for Biden in June, said he spotted a different Joe Biden at the event.

“The only battle he can’t win is against time. None of us can. It’s devastating, but the Joe Biden I was at a fundraiser with three weeks ago was not the ‘big f—‘ Joe Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same man we all saw at the debate,” he wrote.

“Was he tired? Yes. Had a cold? Maybe. But our party leaders need to stop telling us that 51 million people didn’t see what we just saw. We’re all so terrified of a second Trump term that we’ve chosen to ignore every warning sign,” Clooney said.

“I love Joe Biden. As a senator. As a vice president and as a president. I consider him a friend and I believe in him. I believe in his character. I believe in his morals. He’s won many of the battles he’s faced over the last four years,” he added.

Clooney said everyone thinks Republicans should abandon their candidate now that he’s been convicted of 34 felonies. That’s also new and disturbing information.

“Key Democrats — Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries, Nancy Pelosi — and senators, representatives and other candidates who face defeat in November must ask this President to voluntarily resign,” he argued.

“All the scare stories that we’re told about what’s going to happen next are simply not true. The Biden-Harris money could most likely go to help elect the presidential candidates and other Democrats. The new candidate would not be left off the ballot in Ohio,” he said.

“We Democrats have a very exciting bench. We don’t anoint leaders or indulge in a cult of personality; we vote for president. We can easily anticipate that a group of a few strong Democrats will step forward to tell us why they are best qualified to lead this country and to address some of the deeply disturbing trends we see in the revenge tour that Donald Trump is calling his presidential campaign,” Clooney wrote.
