Who is Tori Towey? Irish woman accused of attempted suicide by UAE, now freed

United Arab Emirates (UAE) police dropped charges against Irish national Tori Towey, a 28-year-old flight attendant from Dubai, on Wednesday (July 10). The Roscommon woman was detained on suspicion of attempted suicide and drinking alcohol. She was banned from leaving the country after being detained in the UAE.

Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris had earlier briefed parliament on the developments. “I have just been informed that the travel ban has been lifted, that the embassy will take Tori to the airport as soon as she is ready to leave and that the embassy will of course continue to follow up on the case, which is still active,” he said.

Earlier, the leader of Ireland’s main opposition party raised the issue of Towey’s detention in parliament for the second time in a row.

The prime minister said that now that Towey is free to leave the UAE, she will be brought home as soon as possible.

“We want Tori Towey to come back to this country, we want her to come home to Roscommon,” Harris said.

“We, Ireland, will spare no effort to move this case forward so Tori can come home. She is not a criminal, she is a victim of gender-based violence,” he added.

“The embassy will take Tori to the airport as soon as she is ready to travel,” the Prime Minister told the Dáil (the lower house of the Irish parliament).

He has previously criticized the UAE for its treatment of an Irish citizen in the Arab country. “It was completely, absolutely unacceptable how an Irish citizen was treated,” Harris said.

He added that Towey “was a victim of violence at the hands of men.”

“I think what Tori went through is unimaginable to many people in this country. A woman who was the victim of a brutal attack woke up not in a hospital but in a police station,” the prime minister said.
