The Surgeon General says there’s an epidemic of loneliness in America. For many, that means a lack of friendships at work. Working remotely has exacerbated workplace loneliness. Experts say friendships and a sense of belonging are essential to employee happiness. And to the success of companies. Some organizations are rethinking their physical spaces to foster friendships. Adding stairs, for example, doesn’t just help people take more steps. It encourages so-called “accidental collisions,” which can lead to good relationships. Many workplaces are creating groups and events to help employees find friends who share their interests. Experts urge employees themselves to work on connecting more with coworkers. A simple “hi” can be the beginning of the end of loneliness.
