Culvert collapse in Saharsa, Bihar

(MENAFN- IANS) Patna, July 11 (IANS) Bridges and culverts continue to collapse in Bihar. Another culvert, built in 2005, collapsed in Saharsa district after it was submerged by floodwaters from the Kosi river.

This is the 15th such incident in the last 23 days in the state.

The incident took place on Ward Number 17 road, connecting Kundah Panchayat with Balia Simar Panchayat under Mahishi Block.

A culvert located on the bank of the Kosi River collapsed due to the pressure of flood waters.

As a result, many people from more than a dozen villages have been affected as they remain cut off from the district and the block headquarters. The situation is causing serious concern, especially for those who have planned wedding ceremonies.

“There are around 10 weddings scheduled in my village. My daughter is also getting married. I don’t understand how the wedding procession will be held. The administration should take notice of our suffering. The culvert has become very weak and could not withstand the water pressure,” said Rajiv Kumar, a resident of the village.

Chote Prasad, a junior engineer with the Rural Works Department, said, “The culvert was constructed in 2005 under MLA fund. It collapsed due to heavy flow of flood water from the Kosi river. Traffic was disrupted but it will be restored soon.”
